Perhaps even more than the thrill of watching Olympic competitions themselves, the stories of iconic Olympic champions keep me glued to the games, inspired by those who conquer physical pain, life’s obstacles and/or social injustice.

In Barcelona (1992), Derek Redmond approached the starting line for the 400m semi-final, fully confident as one of the favorites for gold. Seven years prior, he’d broken the British record. In 1986, he won gold for the 4x400m relay at both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games. The victories persisted, though not without challenges.

Injuries interrupted his glorious career several times. In fact, before the 1992 Summer Games, Derek had undergone eight surgeries. His mental strength and perseverance returned him to the racetrack each time.

In Barcelona, Derek was at the peak of his career. As his qualifying event began, he sprinted forward. Moments into his race, he fell to the ground in agony, having torn his hamstring. Then, the incredible happened…Derek braved the impossible as his spirit triumphed over injury. He was determined to finish his race. Watch as he does so with the help of his father.

I pray you find the strength and help from your heavenly Father to overcome whatever challenges you face.
